If you missed the last PinTanong episode, we showed you how to repaint a metal roof. For this one, we’re tackling the process of painting a new G.I. sheet (yero in Filipino). Engineer Kim, from the Boysen Technical Service Department, once again walks you through the step-by-step instructions.

How to Paint a New G.I. Sheet

G.I. sheets are versatile building materials. For homes in the Philippines, they are most commonly used for metal fences, metal gutters, and metal flashing. Applying paint on a G.I. sheet protects it from rain that can cause rusting as well as add to its beautification.

Here is a quick summary of how to paint a new G.I. sheet. For more detailed instructions, watch the video tutorial above.

Step 1:

With a clean rag, wipe the entire surface of the G.I. sheet with paint thinner. This is to remove any dust, dirt, and oil on the G.I. sheet.

Step 2:

Dilute Boysen Metal Etching Solution in water at a ratio of 1:9. With a brush or roller, apply this to the G.I. sheet. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 3:

Again, wipe the entire surface with paint thinner. This time, it’s to remove any excess Metal Etching Solution.

Step 4:

Immediately after, once your surface is dry, apply your chosen primer. For this tutorial, we used Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer. Wait at least 12 hours for the primer to dry.

Step 5:

Finally, apply your chosen topcoat. We chose Boysen Roofgard for its excellent flexibility, color retention, durability against UV rays, and corrosion resistance.

Boysen Roofgard as Topcoat for Metal Surfaces

Boysen has many products that can be used on metal surfaces. Did you know that Boysen Roofgard can be applied on not just roofs? For this project, it was painted on a new bare G.I. sheet but you can also use it on metal gates, metal fences, metal trellises, and other galvanized surfaces.

Boysen Roofgard has a specially formulated acrylic binder and pigment combination that provides good corrosion resistance. It’s reliably durable and can endure changing weather without cracking or peeling. It also has good UV resistance and gloss retention so your paint will retain its original color for a long time.

For best results, pair it with a Boysen primer. In this PinTanong episode, we used Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer but you can also go for Boysen Rust-Off Gray or Boysen Primeguard.
