Being in such a hot, humid, and rainy location like the Philippines can wreak havoc onto our homes. One specific issue that we all seem to tackle is rust. Rust starts off small, unnoticeable, usually from the tiny corners of our metal gates and railings. If left unchecked, it spreads along the entirety of the metal substrates. And before you know it, it’s everywhere! So, how do we stop this menace? Let’s start with prevention: applying a good metal primer like BOYSEN Red Oxide Metal Primer.

What is BOYSEN Red Oxide Metal Primer?

Product in Focus: BOYSEN Red Oxide Metal Primer | MyBoysen

BOYSEN Red Oxide Metal Primer is an alkyd-based, rust inhibiting primer for steel and iron surfaces. It can be applied to both interior and exterior metal substrates. We highly recommend using this as a primer for exposed metal surfaces such as our metal gates, fences, and railings.

Proper Surface Preparation

Wipe the surface with a rag soaked in paint thinner to remove grease, oil, wax, and other foreign matter. For new galvanized surfaces, you may opt to etch the surface by applying 10% Boysen Metal Etching Solution B-71. Dilute 1 part of the metal etching solution to 9 parts water. Rinse with water and dry immediately. Unpainted galvanized surfaces that have been exposed for 6 months or more need not to be etched.

For recoating pre-painted galvanized surfaces in good condition, sand lightly then wipe the surface with a clean rag before applying paint. Remove all loose paint film to sound surface. Spot prime bare substrate.

For corroded galvanized surfaces, remove rust by wire brushing and use BOYSEN Metal Etching Solution B-71. Let it stay for 10 to 15 minutes. Be sure to remove all remaining residue by wiping thinner using a rag. Immediately prime after drying.

Applying Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer

You don’t need any special equipment or techniques to apply Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer. Just make sure to follow the surface preparation recommendations prior to using this product. Apply a solid coat of the metal primer, wait for 12 hours for it to fully dry before painting your topcoat. For metal gates and railings, we suggest using Boysen Quick Drying Enamel. For metal roofings, use either Boysen Cool Shades or Boysen Roofgard.

It’s extremely important to follow the proper painting schedule in any kind of painting project. There have been some instances where people opt out of applying topcoat after the primer. That’s a painting failure waiting to happen! Especially with areas that are exposed to the harsh outdoors, it’s better to be safe than sorry and follow the necessary steps to make sure all your substrates and fixtures are properly protected.
