We’ve seen a bunch of interior design trends crop up lately. There’s New Luxury, Cottagecore, Coastal Grandma, and the rising Gen Z aesthetic to name a few. Here comes another one that’s been getting a good amount of attention on TikTok, the Non-Aesthetic Home trend. Let’s discuss!

Defining a Non-Aesthetic Home

Currently, the #nonaesthetichome hashtag on TikTok has garnered over 10.4 million views. So, it certainly is correct to call it a trend at this point. But what exactly is it?

Unlike other home trends that are more focused on design, like having a certain color palette or furniture style, this one sells you on an idea: your house doesn’t need to look perfect all the time. The Non-Aesthetic Home trend is about embracing homes as what they are—spaces to live in. And that includes all the messy bits.

After all, it’s a lot more realistic to have a living room, kitchen, or bedroom that’s cluttered every so often as opposed to one that’s absolutely immaculate every day of the year. Bringing to light this fact reduces a lot of the pressure of having to have a home that’s always picture-perfect. Do you agree?

Authenticity at Its Center

In the age of social media where we’re constantly exposed to content from interior design publications, sponsored influencers, and tours of celebrity homes, we can get tired of the staged and filtered. Authenticity is a breath of fresh air. It’s refreshing to see homes that are more realistic and relatable.

More and more of us are seeing the value of authenticity. The popularity of the non-aesthetic home is a testament to this. Gen Z, especially, gravitates toward posts that depict what’s “real.”

For example, the Gen Z interior decorating preference does not shy away from clutter and decorating with treasured knick-knacks and items that may not be the most aesthetic but show off their personality. It’s no wonder that the Non-Aesthetic Home trended on TikTok, a social media platform popular among the young generation.

How to Achieve It

Well, the only rule to remember when following the Non-Aesthetic Home trend is to be kind to yourself. So what if your space isn’t IG-worthy right now? As long as it functions and works for you, then there’s nothing wrong with it. Besides, if you do want a more put-together home, that’s what goals are for. Slowly but surely your home will get to where you want it to be.

And remember, trends come and go. Taste is personal and beauty is subjective. It’s always your choice whether to go with what’s “in” or not. Either way, if your home brings you joy, then it’s perfect just the way it is.
