Good day, Lettie.

My new roof is covered with dark grey asphalt shingles. Can I apply Cool Shades?

I’m also thinking of mixing Reflecting White and Shady Grey to get a light grey color. Will this work?

Thank you.

Hi, Boysen User B.

Yes, you can use Boysen Cool Shades on asphalt shingles! Boysen Cool Shades can be applied on a variety of roofing materials including galvanized metal (yero in Filipino), aluminum, stainless steel, and unglazed roof tiles. Just note, however, that it cannot be used on roof decks.

The answer to your second question is also yes! You can absolutely mix the readily available colors of Boysen Cool Shades to achieve other paint colors such as getting the light gray you have in mind.

What we don’t recommend is mixing tinting colors with Boysen Cool Shades as this will mess with the paint’s formulation and performance. Mixing the readily available colors together is a-okay though.

Here are the instructions for painting your asphalt shingles with Boysen Cool Shades:

  1. Clean your roof to remove any dirt, dust, grease, oil, and other contaminants on the surface. This will help ensure your paint will adhere nicely. Good adhesion leads to good paint performance!
  2. Prime your roof with Boysen Permacoat B-701 white. You only need to apply one coat of this. Wait for at least an hour for the paint to dry.
  3. Finally, paint with Boysen Cool Shades. At least 2 coats are recommended with a recoat interval of 2 to 4 hours in between. You’ll be able to cover around 30 to 35 sq.m. per 4 liters. Apply using a brush, roller, or airless spray. No need to thin but you can if you want to with 1/2 liter of clean water per 4 liters of paint.

Thanks for choosing Boysen Cool Shades, by the way! The infrared-reflecting pigments in it bounce sunlight off your roof before it can turn into heat that gets absorbed into your home. This helps keep your home cool in the blazing Philippine heat.

It also has outstanding durability, excellent dirt pick-up resistance, and a selection of readily available colors to choose from.

Happy painting!
