Here are three trends—grandmacore, farmhouse, and vintage—that I’ve lumped together because to me they have similar aesthetics.
These interior design styles wouldn’t appeal to those who prefer the clean, minimalist look, but somehow it is very fitting to talk about it now that Christmas is approaching.
Commonalities of Grandmacore, Homestead, and Vintage
Purists for these styles would shudder that I am putting them all together here. But since I am not a believer of following trends, I would rather point out what’s common about them than what sets them apart from each other.
Nostalgia
For me, this is one of the unifying factor that makes me feel that these interior styles belong together. It’s nostalgia, that bittersweet feeling when we see the joyful past experiences through a rose-colored lens, especially when we enjoyed rituals with our grandparents and extended families.
Usually, Christmas is a time when family come together. Sometimes, even if you are not related by blood but you come from the same village, you would think of yourselves as “cousins”. More so if you are living abroad. Even just being Pinoy makes you cousins, to the nth degree of consanguinity or not.
Ancestral homes, farmhouses, and vintage objects dial up the nostalgia factor. You may even have stories to tell about your heirloom pieces. Wonderful memories of the times you spent with your elders and relatives bring a warm feeling. It may embrace you and take you down memory lane to think, and talk, about the good, old days.
Thrifting
Gen Z loves thrifting. There are several reasons why this generation wants to master buying pre-loved furniture and objects that have a vintage look:
- they want to save money,
- sustainability—they want to save the planet,
- self-expression is a priority.
They have no fear of mixing styles, and somehow it just works. Usually, Gen Z home spaces are eclectic, maximalist, and colorful.
Having these interior styles as trends are an indication that other generations too are designing their homes in a similar fashion.
If you have not watched Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy in Netflix yet, I suggest you give the film a look-see. You will see how big business plays us, and how much we are harming the environment because of our consumerism.
Comfort Comes First
Comfort is key to those who love these styles. That, and coziness. Home spaces are not for show but to be lived in.
Gatherings here cocoon people in a warm and welcoming embrace. Aside from meals, other activities that could take place are cooking and baking together, gardening, sewing, holding book club meetings, playing mahjong and board games, sharing secrets in tête-à-têtes, and yes, karaoke and dancing!
Anyone in your circle has grandmacore, farmhouse, and vintage styles for their homes? Maybe your tribe can try holding your holiday get-togethers there. Find out how nostalgia can add an extra sparkle to you and yours this Christmas.
