There are many provinces in the country that can boast of vast farmlands and beautiful natural scenery like the likes of Nueva Ecija and Rizal. However, a home in these areas can encounter problems specifically because it’s surrounded by vegetation as well. This easy-to-follow painting guide by experts at Boysen should help.

One of the main paint-related problems of homes in high vegetation areas have to do with mold, mildew, and fungi infestations. It’s a particularly pesky problem as infestations like these do tend to come back. Regular maintenance, such as being diligent with cleaning to control their growth, can keep them at bay for some time. However, if your home is especially prone to this type of problem because of the area where you live, regular maintenance can very easily get tiresome.

So, this is where Boysen experts say prevention is just as important as cure. Here is a guide to paint-specific preventive measures that will help control the growth of mold, mildew, and fungi.

Exterior Surfaces

1.  For waterproofing or water resistance, use Boysen Plexibond or Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High Performance Acrylic Skimcoat

Any home will benefit from a degree of waterproofing including those in high vegetation areas (especially if the region is prone to typhoons as well). Boysen Plexibond is the go-to product for waterproofing. It forms a seamless, non-porous, impenetrable layer that disperses water upon contact. Mixed with Portland cement, Boysen Plexibond is applied on bare concrete that has not been previously painted and dries to an orange-peel texture.

As another option, Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High Performance Acrylic Skimcoat also has water-resisting properties. One of its main differences from Boysen Plexibond is its smooth finish. As it is a skimcoat, it also smoothens a cement finish and repairs surface defects like cracks, gaps, and honeycombs as long as the imperfections are 2mm to 3mm in thickness. It is mixed with sifted cement at a 1:1 ratio and applied on bare concrete with a trowel.

2.  As an exterior paint, use Boysen Wallguard

To prevent and combat mildew, go for Boysen Wallguard. A water-based, acrylic paint, Boysen Wallguard has many redeeming qualities as an exterior paint. For homes in high vegetation areas, it has a high resistance to mildew—the very problem experienced by most houses surrounded by nature and greenery. It is also highly durable and able to withstand exposure to different types of weather. It resists dirt and dust as well as fading, cracking, and peeling which all help your paint to look fresh for a long time

Boysen Wallguard can be used on new concrete surfaces as well as repainting old structures. If painting a surface with existing paint, check if there are existing painting problems (such as hairline cracks and peeling paint) and fix them first. If the surface is mold-infested, treat with a bleach solution (1:3, laundry bleach to water, respectively) by swabbing or brushing.

Boysen Wallguard comes in a semi-gloss finish in white. To achieve other colors, it can be tinted using Boysen Latex Colors at a maximum level of 1/4 liter per 4-liter can.
