March is National Women’s Month in the Philippines and we will be writing about the female spirit in the coming weeks to celebrate women. This first post (in a series of four) is about the colors of the Explorer archetype.

I googled the question “what do women want,” and expected some wisdom from the internet. Much to my surprise, the first page answers to the search were more about what kind of men women wanted.

So I conducted an informal survey with women I know and I got many deliberate answers. At first, I categorized the answers using generations, i.e., boomers (born 1946-1964), Generation X (born 1965-1980), and Millennials (born 1981-1996). After looking at the answers carefully, this categorization didn’t make sense because the life conditions and personal development of each individual didn’t depend on age.

Based on the answers given, I decided to use archetypes (personality types) instead. I found four archetypes—The Explorer, The Creator, The Nurturer, and The Sage. However, not all had longings that could be placed in a single box, meaning that some of the respondents could belong to more than one category.

The Explorer

The Explorer is a seeker of new lands, not only physical ones but also figurative ones, like learning new things to develop the self. She goes beyond her comfort zone, firmly believing that to see and understand new perspectives will help her grow as a person.

Freedom is a very important driver for the Explorer. She believes in YOLO, not FOMO, because she is essentially curious, bold, and daring. She is stimulated by new things and new experiences. The Explorer has no qualms flying off to discover new lands, or to do things on her own. Highly independent, she navigates through life believing that the world is a good and exciting place.

The Explorer is not naive though. There’s a method to her boldness whether it’s being savvy with maps, transport systems, and travel info. Now that physical travel is not on the table, this does not stop her from her explorations. She understands that the internal journey is very important too so she picks up a skill or two while in quarantine, making the most out of this time. YOLO, remember?

After all, what is the most important journey that we all undertake if not the journey home to ourselves?

The Interior Style and Colors of the Explorer

We’ve made a color palette for each archetype. The colors in this blog post were chosen to represent the Explorer.

The boho chic interior style is one that fits the personality of the Explorer. It would not be surprising that she would incorporate new, sometimes even exotic, influences into her home. She is changed by her experiences.

Boho Chic is a style which draws on bohemian and hippie influences. It’s the mixing of old and new items from different cultural origins. Even textures are plentiful and varied, like using velvet, silk, wood, metal, weaves, lace, rope. The combinations are plenty and very individual.

Her lode star is the sun. This is the reason for the tawny and warm palette of orange, gold, and light brown. She is not afraid of these bright colors in her life because these hues are symbolic of the courage and passion that she possesses. These colors also speak of empowerment and a deep understanding of self.

Freedom to be herself is vital to her. So if you find that you are an Explorer by heart, then liberate yourself and find that which makes your heart beat joyously and strongly.

Snippets from the Survey

These are some of the answers I got during my informal survey:

I would like to travel the world, learn and experience different cultures, eventually buy a house in a place where my heart takes me.

What I want out of life is to have inner peace. Not having to feel like I need to constantly prove my worth and justify my decisions to my family. Not have to overthink every small anxiety I have. To be able to appreciate everything in my life right now, not thinking “I’ll be happy once I…” or “I’ll be happy if…”.

Now, I’d really want to be able to travel to my heart’s content, and to have a place of my own where what I want reigns.

To the women who are Explorers, may your life be full of brightness and excitement. Your passion will ultimately bring you what your heart desires. I wish you the courage to break free of the “cage” that you feel is around you. You have the compassion to gently liberate yourself, and the boldness to step out into the sun to grow as your soul craves to do.

By the way, archetypes are applicable to men too.
