Dear Lettie,

I’m planning to paint my roof. Kindly give me advice.

My roof is made of GI sheets. Most of it has existing paint but some portions are not painted because they’re newly bought and added recently.

The painted portions have paint that’s about 7 to 10 years old. They have primer and one coat of topcoat. There’s some rusting but barely noticeable and mostly on the nails.

I want to use Boysen Cool Shades as topcoat.

Thank you.

From,
Boysen User M

Hi, Boysen User M.

Thanks for messaging us. Let’s get your roof painted. Here’s what I recommend:

For the Painted Areas of the Roof

Surface Preparation

If the paint is still in good condition, simply sand the surface lightly then wipe with a clean rag. Make sure you remove any loose paint film by sanding those areas too until you get a sound surface. Spot prime any spots that have been stripped to bare metal using Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer.

For the rusted areas, remove as much of the rust as you can with a wire brush then apply Boysen Metal Etching Solution. Let the solution stay for 10 to 15 minutes. After, wipe the area with thinner using a rag. Apply primer on the spots where you’ve carried out rust treatment. (Find more detailed instructions on rust treatment here.)

Painting

By this stage, you should have already spot-primed any areas where bare metal is exposed. All that’s left is to apply 2 coats of Boysen Cool Shades. Recoat interval is 2 hours.

For the Unpainted Areas of the Roof

Surface Preparation

First, with a rag soaked in paint thinner, wipe down the surface to remove grease, oil, wax, and other foreign matter on the new GI sheet.

Next, you will need to etch your surface to prep it for paint. Do this by diluting 1 part Boysen Metal Etching Solution to 9 parts water and applying it on the surface. Rinse with water and dry immediately. Note as well that if it’s been 6 months or more since your unpainted GI sheet has been installed on your roof, you won’t need to etch it.

Painting

Prime your unpainted surface with Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer. Wait for 12 hours to allow it to completely dry. Then, apply 2 coats of Boysen Cool Shades. Recoat interval is 2 hours.

And, you’re done. Hope this helps and good luck!
