October 31 may be Halloween for those in the U.S., but for us in the Philippines, the celebration during this time of the year is more about honoring our loved ones who have passed. Many of us go home for this ritual, and those who could, may already have left last weekend or preparing to leave today, to be there wherever you have to be on November 1 for Undas.

Undas is known as Adlaw sa mga Kalag in Bisaya, or All Souls Day. In the Philippines, celebrating our departed loved ones is a mixture of religious and secular practices, mostly converging at the cemeteries and columbariums.

We’ve prepared three color palettes with mostly sombre hues, which may not be something most of us reach for when we paint our homes. If you are flirting with the notion of taking a break from the usual whites and light neutrals and considering sombre hues, these color palettes are worth considering. These dark colors can give your rooms a sophisticated look.

Genteel Grays

Give your walls a coat of any of the dark gray and charcoal hues, and lift the mood with powdery mauve and a soft yellow. If you want something lighter to be your primary paint, go for taupe, which is a warm gray color.

Dark Evergreens

The earthy dark green vibe of this palette connotes growth and luxury. Also, this color palette would give your home a calm and relaxing atmosphere, perfect to help you regain your peace and balance.

Quiet Purple Passion

Do you want your home to throb with a quiet passion? Then, go for this purple color palette. The tinge of red in most of the colors provides a twist to the usual dark grays. Even though most of the colors are dark, you would still get to feel the warm cocooning in your home that most, if not all, of us crave.

Blessed Undas

If you are thinking of traveling back to your roots now, we wish you godspeed and fair weather. Remembering and honoring our loved ones who have passed is a beautiful ritual. It can remind us of the loving lessons we were taught by people we respect, of the meaningful memories shared, and the blessings we received because they were part of our tribe.

Blessed Undas, everyone!
