Hi, Lettie.

I saw the Konstrukt Lunar Series guide on your blog. I like Kaiser and want to achieve it for a project.

I’m wondering if I can apply this finish to marine plywood used in bathroom cabinets exposed to humid and moisture-prone conditions. What are your thoughts? Please advise.

Thank you!

Hello, Boysen User D.

Good, you found the Konstrukt Luna Series! Thanks for reading the blog too. The look of the Kaiser finish is what usually comes to mind when people think of the industrial aesthetic. It’s smooth, matte, and very aesthetically pleasing.

The Kaiser Finish

You should know though that the Kaiser finish cannot be applied on wooden surfaces. So, no, I wouldn’t recommend you use it on marine plywood for your bathroom cabinets. As it makes use of Konstrukt products, specifically the Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High-Performance Acrylic Skimcoat, it’s meant to be applied on bare concrete surfaces.

The good thing though is that you’re not limited to interiors. You can apply it to exteriors as well. Maybe you can find use for it outside instead, like for an outdoor lanai. To protect it from the elements, you’ll need Boysen Acrytex Sealer and then Boysen Matte Shield afterward. You’ll be able to find step-by-step instructions here: Konstrukt Lunar Series: A Guide to the Kaiser Finish.

Remember, the Konstrukt Lunar Series finishes are best applied by seasoned professionals. It takes a fair bit of skill to get the look right. If you’re not entirely confident in your abilities with a steel trowel just yet, there’s nothing wrong with asking for help.

The Modern Concrete Look with Konstrukt

If I were to guess, I would say that you’re trying to create an industrial style space.

Faux cement finishes are gaining popularity in large part due to their use in homes and establishments that aim to achieve the industrial interior design style. One of the key characteristics of this style is that it is a celebration of the rawness of materials—wood, brick, metal, and concrete.

The bare cement finish creates a distinctly modern look which is often made more inviting with the addition of warm lighting, wooden fixtures, and indoor greenery.

And yes, you can look through the Konstrukt Lunar Series to choose from 9 decorative cement faux finishes, which includes Kaiser, that are achieved with the standard Konstrukt line of products. See them all here: Konstrukt Lunar Series: A Guide to Industrial Finishes.

Good luck and hope you find something else more suited for your bathroom cabinets!
