Make a good first impression. Let the first thing people see when they see your home be a well-kept, beautifully painted gate. Here’s Engineer Kim from the Boysen Technical Service Department to show you how to repaint a metal gate in this PinTanong Videoserye episode.
How to Repaint a Metal Gate
When repainting gates, you’ll need paint that’s meant for high-touch surfaces. Your gate goes through a lot, not just because of the weather but the everyday comings and goings of your household too. Open and close. In and out. It’s why regular maintenance—which includes repainting—is key.
For this project, we’ll be using Boysen Quick Drying Enamel. Being an enamel paint, it’s durable, long-lasting, and provides a beautiful gloss coating to surfaces.
Note: Always check the compatibility of the existing paint on the surface and the new paint product you plan on using to avoid paint incompatibility. Learn about it here.
Here is a quick summary of how to repaint a metal gate using Boysen Quick Drying Enamel. Watch the tutorial video above for the full instructions.
Step 1:
Check the gate for holes and rusting. Holes must be filled and rusted areas should be dealt with before you begin painting. If the metal is in terrible condition, it might be best to replace it altogether.
Step 2:
Areas without rusting or any other paint problems will need light sanding. This will help ensure the new coating will adhere well to your gate.
Step 3:
Carry out proper rust treatment in all areas of your gate where you see rusting.
Step 4:
Clean the entirety of your gate to remove any dirt and sanding dust on the surface. Make sure your gate is dry before you begin painting.
Step 5:
Spot prime all areas where you carried out rust treatment and wherever you see the bare metal of your gate already exposed. You can use Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer.
Step 6:
Once the primer is dry, apply 2 coats of your topcoat. We recommend Boysen Quick Drying Enamel for metal gates.
