Years ago, a client called our technical department and shouted at the engineer who answered the phone. The homeowner was upset because the painter he hired to paint the roof in one of his properties located in the north of Luzon sent him a photo of the freshly painted roof. What should have been Boysen Roofgard Baguio Green B-2550 looked like a pukey neon green, perhaps a hue like the recently viral Brat green of Charli XCX.
I don’t blame the owner if he was shocked. Neon green does that to you. The hapless Boysen engineer plodded on and called a Boysen area representative. Working together, the technical engineer was able to get hold of a picture of the roof using a different mobile phone. The green looked closer to the hue of the Boysen Roofgard green.
What happened? Why was there a huge color discrepancy between devices?
Colors Seen Through Devices
Different devices have varying color profiles and calibrations. Manufacturers of mobile phones, computers, laptops, monitors, projectors, printers, etc., tweak the color settings to what they believe is the best image quality. A second reason for the difference in colors is mass production variation (BenQ).
This is why a color would look different when using different devices, as shown in the image above.
This is also the reason why we put the following disclaimer when we use a paint swatch in our digital channels—Swatch may not match actual paint color.
Paint Colors in Boysen Social Media
We show paint color swatches in our social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube. We often make color palettes as well to make it easier to pick another color if you want more than one to use in a room.
Even more helpful is the Boysen app that you can download for free. Read this to know more about how you can choose a paint color using the app.
Can’t Decide? These Boysen App Tools Make It Easier to Pick a Paint Color
However, this is a tool that will help you focus on a color family. To really hone in on the color you want, you need to see the actual paint color before you buy.
How to See the Paint Color IRL
There are several ways you can check the color that you have chosen from the app or from images in devices to make sure that you get the closest color match.
1. Get your own Boysen paint swatch or fan deck.
A paint color fan deck is a tool that architects, interior designers, property developers and contractors have on hand. You can have one too by purchasing your own fan deck from the Boysen website. This can be a very useful tool if you want to (re)paint your properties.
2. Visit a Boysen Mix and Match station.
Quick and Hassle-Free! Boysen Mix & Match Makes It Easy to Get Paint Colors
Click on this list of the Mix and Match stations. Go visit the one closest to you and ask to see the fan decks so you can look at the color you’ve chosen.
Read the post to guide you through the process when you get to a station.
3. Visit The Color Library at the Mall of Asia.
Paint TechTalk with Lettie: How Do I See the Swatches at The Color Library?
The Color Library near IKEA at the Mall of Asia has Colorbooks. They are much bigger than the color swatches found in the fan decks. The paint colors are not painted on paper but on MDF boards that have been properly prepped and primed to make sure the color painted comes out correctly.
Test the Paint Color
The ultimate check of the paint color you want to use is to sample colors of similar tones first. It can’t get any more IRL than this.
Get 200 mL pots of the colors you want to see on your wall in The Color Library or thru the Boysen website. This link gives a step-by-step guide on how you can paint samples on the actual wall you want to (re)paint, and see how light affects the colors at different times during the day.
Don’t skip this step if you want to make sure that you have the color you really want before you start the actual painting of huge expanses of surfaces. This is an additional step but it can help you save time, energy, and money, and in the end, make you a happy camper because you’re surrounded with colors in your home that you wanted right from the start.
Gift your home with the paint color of your dreams this new year.
