Hello, Lettie.
Can I apply Boysen Plexibond over a powder skimcoat that has no primer or paint on it?
Thanks!
From,
Boysen User M
Hi, Boysen User M!
To cut to the point, we don’t recommend applying Boysen Plexibond on a surface with powdered skimcoat. For your project, we recommend consulting with the manufacturer of the skimcoat for proper product use and compatibility.
Remember, Plexibond is a water-based acrylic polymer. So, if you’re looking for a skimcoat to pair it with, it’s best to find one that’s acrylic type. I would suggest Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High Performance Acrylic Skimcoat.
Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High Performance Acrylic Skimcoat
Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High Performance Acrylic Skimcoat is an alternative plastering on bare concrete walls. It addresses concrete imperfections that are 2 to 3 mm in thickness and will give your walls a smooth finish.
It’s formulated to have excellent paint compatibility which means you can use it with different concrete paint types like water-based, solvent-based, or elastomeric. It can also be used on both interior and exterior applications.

Boysen Plexibond
I’m happy you like Boysen Plexibond too! Plexibond is Boysen’s cementitious waterproofing system. It’s applied in places that come in direct contact with water and moisture. This is called positive-side waterproofing. Some areas in the home to use Plexibond include your firewall, roof deck, bathroom, and concrete canopy. You cannot use Plexibond where it will be submerged in water like ponds and pools.
To use Plexibond, mix it first with cement. For every 4 liters of Plexibond, add 6.5 to 7.5 kg of cement. Although you can mix by hand, the job is made easier with a machine like a power mixer because you want to make sure you don’t get any lumps. The resulting mixture will have a pot life of 2 hours. Stir as often as you can to avoid settling.
When it comes to consistency, using Plexibond should feel like you’re applying any other paint. You can achieve a smooth finish with a brush or roller and a textured finish with a textured roller.
After using Plexibond, Boysen experts advise to always apply paint on top. Allowing it to be directly exposed to the elements, like sunlight and heavy rains, leads to a higher likelihood of cracks.
Wait a day after application and pick one of these paint products as topcoat: Boysen Permacoat, Boysen Acrytex, Boyen Acqua Epoxy. You can also check here for a full list of other paints you can use. It’s not recommended that you use a skimcoat on top of Plexibond.
