We’ve already tackled some of Boysen’s clear coat products on this blog. There’s Boysen Clear Acrylic Emulsion, Boysen Acrytex Clear Coat, Boysen Matte Shield, and Hudson Timbercoat. All of these have their own specific uses. If none of those fit your project, maybe this one will. Here’s an overview of Boysen Aquaseal.

What is Boysen Aquaseal

Boysen Aquaseal is a silicone-based penetrating sealer designed to provide protection and maximum water repellency to masonry and stone surfaces. So, yes, you can use it on exterior concrete, stone, or brick walls you want to keep pristine for as long as possible.

Aside from repelling water and moisture, it can also beautify and enhance the natural look of whatever you’re applying it on with the help of its matte finish. Plus, it can also minimize the unsightly appearance of efflorescence that’s common for stone surfaces.

How to Use Boysen Aquaseal

Aquaseal can be used on a wide variety of aboveground masonry and stone surfaces including concrete, brick, rubble, and sandblast finishes.

It functions as both a clear sealer and topcoat which means you can apply it directly to bare substrate and have no need to apply anything afterward. With that said, note as well that Aquaseal should only be used on bare surfaces. It will not work as intended when applied to a surface with an existing coating.

Apply Aquaseal liberally to the surface with a brush. Coat enough to sufficiently saturate whatever you want to protect. Use it straight out of the can; thinning this product is not recommended. It can’t be applied with a spray either.

How It Differs from Other Boysen Clear Coats

Boysen Matte Shield vs. Boysen Aquaseal

Though they have a similar matte finish, Matte Shield is applied on indoor painted surfaces to provide abrasion resistance—emphasis on “painted”. One of the primary uses of this product is to protect decorative finishes like Boysen DECORe Classic. It’s also used for faux concrete finishes like several of the designs in the Konstrukt Lunar Series. Aquaseal is for bare masonry and stone surfaces.

Boysen Acrytex Clear Coat vs. Boysen Aquaseal

Both Acrytex Clear Coat and Aquaseal can both be used to protect masonry, stone, and brick surfaces. The former has a glossy shine while the latter has a matte finish.

Importantly, where Aquaseal is a stand-alone system—meaning, as explained earlier, it is both sealer and topcoat—Acrytex Clear Coat is not. If you want to use it on the mentioned surfaces, you have to apply Acrytex Sealer first then Acrytex Clear Coat after.

Boysen Clear Acrylic Emulsion vs. Boysen Aquaseal

Clear Acrylic Emulsion is a sealer that protects concrete against moisture but it is not a topcoat. It’s used on interior concrete surfaces and applied after a primer and before a topcoat. Boysen Aquaseal acts as sealer and topcoat for concrete.

Hudson Timbercoat vs. Boysen Aquaseal

Hudson Timbercoat is a sealer and topcoat for wooden surfaces. Boysen Aquaseal is for masonry and stone.
