We get a lot of inquiries about recommendations for clear topcoats. Though Boysen Clear Acrylic Emulsion has “clear” in its name, it’s not one of the products we recommend for a topcoat (see what it’s really for here).
Instead, pick from the Boysen products in the list below. Keep in mind that each of these has its own set of surfaces that it’s suitable for. Always follow product recommendations to get the best possible results.
Boysen Acrytex Clear Coat
If you’ve got a beautiful brick wall at home, of course, you would want to flaunt it. Give it an attractive glossy finish and excellent protection with Boysen Acrytex Clear Coat.
Boysen Acrytex Clear Coat is used as a clear coat protection for bricks, natural stone, masonry, and wooden surfaces. You can also use it to add a glossy shine to faux cement finishes. For example, Kashmir, from the Konstrukt Lunar Series, has it as a topcoat as it lends a polished sheen to the surface.
This product is an acrylic solvent-based coating and, like the rest of the products in the Acrytex lineup, it has excellent adhesion and long-term durability. Apply it on both interior and exterior surfaces.

Boysen Matte Shield
You’ve worked hard on making your home walls look beautiful. Help it stay that way with Boysen Matte Shield. It provides excellent abrasion resistance for painted surfaces indoors.
A water-based clear matte coating for interiors, Boysen Matte Shield is designed to provide protection over paint topcoats especially if you opted for decorative finishes. This includes Boysen DECORe Classic, a decorative paint system that can simulate the texture and look of European architecture.
Prefer industrial-style interiors? Some faux concrete finish designs from the Konstrukt Lunar Series will also include Boysen Matte Shield in its painting system.

Hudson Timbercoat
For a clear coating for wooden surfaces, grab a container of Hudson Timbercoat. It’s a 2-in-1 sealer and topcoat that provides clear protection to wooden floors, furniture, cabinets, doors, panels, and other wooden surfaces. Use it on its own or after a wood stain for both interior and exterior surfaces.
It comes in three different finishes—gloss, semi-gloss, and matte—giving you more options for the sheen you prefer. It’s water-based too so, unlike solvent-based sealers, it only gives off a mild odor. Nevertheless, for safety, make sure the area still has good ventilation.
