Alkyd-based paints (also called oil-based paints) like Boysen Quick Drying Enamel are your go-to products when trying to breathe new life into furniture. They provide a durable, long-lasting finish with excellent hiding you would want in a paint for wood and metal surfaces. Something like a metal chair for a garden or a wood shelf would appreciate the touch of color from paints.

Boysen Quick Drying Enamel has a selection of over 20 colors, but you can make your own through Boysen Oil Tinting Colors. These are the designated colorants for alkyd-based paints allowing you to achieve pastel to medium tones for your home’s furnishings.

For DIY painters, it is an advantage to know how to mix your colors using Boysen Oil Tinting Colors because of how much you can achieve with the selection of tints you want. You can also mix these colorants with other alkyd-based products like Boysen Semi-Gloss Enamel or Boysen Flatwall Enamel. The latter is the designated primer when painting wood, but it can also be its own topcoat for those who want a flat finish, making it a good paint to use for surfaces like wood ceilings because its matte finish minimizes the visibility of dirt and dust.

Step-by-Step Guide on Mixing Boysen Oil Tinting Colors

Step 1: Get Your Product

First things first—you have to get yourself the correct tinting colors for your project. Boysen also offers other colorants for different types of paints such as water-based paints or lacquer paints. Again, Boysen Oil Tinting Colors are what you need for alkyd-based enamel paints for wood or metal surfaces.

If you use a different type of colorant, you can cause the paint to gel and be unusable. Be mindful of the product you’re using to avoid wasting resources.

Step 2: Stir Well Before Use

For the colorant, as well as the paint you’re using, stir first. It’s also useful to check if adverse problems like skinning have occurred. This is where an insoluble solid film due to moisture exposure has been formed. If this ever happens, you can always remove parts that are skinning, inspect the quality of the paint, and stir if it’s still usable.

Step 3: Pour the Colorant Following the Maximum Ratio

Pour the colorant onto the paint, being mindful of the maximum ratio of colorant to paint which is 1:16.

Here’s a tip: Boysen Oil Tinting Colors come in 1/4-liter cans which you can directly mix with enamel paints that come in 4-L containers. That should follow the maximum 1:16 ratio allowing you to create medium tones depending on the colors you choose.

Note when planning to paint surfaces for outdoor use, the colors Bulletin Red (B-2315) and (B-2319) Hansa Yellow are for interior applications only.

Step 4: Mix!

Stir the paint once you’ve put the amount of colorant you want on the paint. Mix thoroughly until the color becomes even.

Always remember to follow the 1:16 ratio of colorant to paint. It’s also what you need to remember when combining colorants to create more complex colors. Let’s say you want to mix Hansa Yellow and Thalo Green. If you’re aiming for an equal proportion of both colors, you should then mix 1/8 liter of Hansa Yellow and 1/8 liter of Thalo Green for a 4-L paint. However you want to mix colorants, just remember to not exceed the ratio.
