We have a Boysen Plexibond user who also wants to reinforce their home with a fiberglass mesh. Read on Lettie’s guide for when you’re in a similar boat.

Dear Lettie,

We are planning to use Boysen Plexibond mixed with cement and reinforced with a fiberglass mesh, so that when there is wall movement, it cannot break easily. Is this advisable?

From,

Boysen User J

Dear Boysen User J,

You can definitely use a fiberglass mesh when applying Boysen Plexibond. This product is a cementitious waterproofing system that helps against water seepage.

While the Plexibond itself is not mixed with anything other than Portland cement, you can place a fiberglass mesh or matting in the application schedule. It is used to reinforce joints, corners and active cracks susceptible to cracking or movement.

How to Apply Fiberglass Mesh with Boysen Plexibond

First things first, know how to prepare a Boysen Plexibond mixture.

Slowly mix 6.5–7.5 kilograms of cement to 4-Liters of Boysen Plexibond. Gradually add the cement in intervals while constantly stirring to prevent lumping and settling. Pass the mixture through a fine strainer to sift out lumpy materials. The pot life of this mixture is two hours.

For vertical surfaces like a firewall, apply the fiberglass mesh on the 1st coat of the Plexibond mixture white it is still wet. Let it dry, then apply the second coat. Vertical surfaces need 2–3 coats, with a recoat interval of 1–2 hours.

Don’t forget to apply a paint topcoat. Boysen Permacoat Latex or Titan Superflex Elastomeric Paint are some of your options.

For horizontal surfaces like a roof deck, apply the fiberglass mesh after the 2nd coat of the Plexibond mixture while it’s wet. Once the coat and mesh are dry, apply the subsequent coat. 3–5 coats are needed for horizontal surfaces, ensuring the mesh is completely covered. Let the last coat dry for one day, then apply a bond coat. This is Boysen Plexibond not mixed with anything. Apply the mortar topping while it is still wet or tacky.

Afterwards, you can then apply tilings or Boysen Acqua Epoxy as a paint option.

Reinforcing Your Home with Boysen Plexibond and Fiberglass Matting

It’s definitely recommended to take the steps to keep your home protected from rain and water through positive-side waterproofing with Boysen Plexibond. Other means to strengthen parts of your home such as the use of fiberglass matting is also worthwhile.

I hope this guide has thoroughly informed you of what you need to do. Good luck with your project, Boysen User J!
