Worried about Boysen Cool Shades on a gray primer not reflecting heat? That’s one of the concerns of a Boysen user, as well as other concerns on the product. Let’s see what Lettie has to say.

Dear Lettie,

I applied two coats of Boysen Epoxy Primer in a gray color for our roof made of metal. I want to use Boysen Cool Shades because of its heat-reflecting properties, but I’m concerned that the primer might make it ineffective. Should a white primer have been applied first?

What also happens if Spring Green or Polarize Blue is placed on the gray primer? Is it still effective at reflecting heat?

Thank you for your answer.

From,

Cool Shades User R

Dear Cool Shades User R,

Making our spaces more comfortable would definitely be at the top of our mind, especially with the upcoming super El Niño. Boysen Cool Shades is one of those products you can consider to improve your home with hot weather in consideration. Formulated with infrared-reflecting pigments, it has been tested to reduce heat buildup in our homes.

Our country’s climate has an influence on the choices we make when designing our home. Boysen recently participated in the Cool Roofs, Smart Choice campaign that promotes white roofing to reduce heat buildup in buildings and our homes.

That’s why I understand your concern when it comes to the product’s efficacy. If white paint is most effective at reducing heat, surely a white topcoat on white primer is the way to go? Let’s address your concerns one by one.

Primers for Boysen Cool Shades

Apply Boysen Cool Shades on properly primed surfaces. To achieve the maximum cooling effect of the product, one of the best primer options you should consider is Boysen Primeguard in white color. This primer is also a water-based primer with low-odor and fast-drying properties.

For roofs with existing rust, follow the steps in repainting metal roofs.

Boysen PinTanong Videoserye: How to Repaint a Metal Roof

The primers you can use for this process are Boysen Red Oxide Primer or Boysen Rust-Off Gray Alkyd Metal Primer. These two have corrosion-inhibiting properties, as well as promote good adhesion for the topcoats you would use.

Boysen Epoxy Primer is also a suitable primer for metal surfaces. As long as you follow the induction time and reduce it to an applicable viscosity, Boysen Epoxy Primer is still good at ensuring Boysen Cool Shades adheres well.

Given your multiple options, you shouldn’t worry as much about Boysen Cool Shades’ heat-reducing properties drastically dropping. You still get that cooling effect regardless if you use a red or gray primer. What matters is that the surface you are working on is properly primed.

In fact, you don’t need to prime at all when you are repainting roofs with its paint in good condition. You only need to lightly sand, clean, then apply at least two coats of Boysen Cool Shades.

The Heat-Reducing Properties of Boysen Cool Shades

It’s your second concern that you need to think about. Let’s lay out the facts. In terms of the most effective roof paint color for cooling your home, Boysen Cool Shades’ Reflecting White is measured to be the most effective.

The other colors of Boysen Cool Shades can’t compare to the reliable white roof. However, those paint hues still have the ability to make your rooms less hot. Again, it has something to do with the infrared-reflecting pigments that reduces heat buildup in your homes.

It really depends on what you want for your home. Spring Green and Polarize Blue are attractive colors for your roofing, while still reflecting heat. Though if you want the maximum cooling effect brought by white roofs, you would still have a home that looks good.

The decision will ultimately be yours. Hopefully, these considerations have been thoroughly explained, so you can choose the right products to make a beautiful and comfortable home.

Good luck with your painting project!

Your painting partner,

Lettie
