I feel like a staircase can never be an afterthought when designing your home. If you live in homes with at least two stories, you would have to go up and down stairs everyday. You wouldn’t want that part of your home to be boring and mundane, right?
There’s plenty of ways to add visual interest to your stairs, but perhaps the most popular is to use wood and their textures. To achieve a stunning wood finish for your stairs, the key is high-tier stains and varnishes that are sure to enhance the look and provide durability for your surfaces.

Stains and Clear Coats for Wooden Stairs
For Treads
Treads are the steps of a staircase. These surfaces experience foot traffic, so what you need are coatings designed to resist the wear and tear of each step.
Let’s first talk about Hudson Timbercoat Polyurethane Wood Coating. A single-component product, it will varnish to a film that’s resistant to abrasion, detergent and most chemicals. It also won’t likely yellow which can occur when varnish gets exposed to the elements. There’s a lot of great features for this wood coating, and that’s on top of it being water-based and lower-odor so it doesn’t have the strong smells most varnish would have.

You can also use Boysen Xyladecor prior to the application of a varnish to provide color and enhance the wood look of the material. It is the go-to stain for wood that will experience foot traffic. It is also a sealer and wood preserver, so it not only makes your stairs more attractive, but makes it last longer too.

For Handrails and Balusters
The handrail is what you hold to assist you while you go up and down the stairs. Balusters are the vertical structures that hold the handrail. You can use Boysen Xyladecor for staining this part of the stairs, but if you’re going for a two-tone look (which can be really attractive), you can explore your options for products not necessarily meant for foot traffic.
One of these is Oil Wood Stain which you can’t use for the treads but is still effective for the handrails and balusters. This product has five color choices which will help enhance the look of the wood material.

After application of the wood stain, use Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer for sealing the wood. After that process, finish it up with your choice of Boysen Lacquer Clear Coat for a durable topcoat. Boysen lacquer products for varnishing come in gloss and flat options.
The aforementioned Hudson Timbercoat is also an option for handrails and balusters.
