Chiaroscuro—sounds sosyalin and Italian. Well, it is Italian, translating to “light-dark.” It’s a technique in art that involves a stark contrast produced by illuminating a section of the work and making the background much darker. The method is used to bring focus to a particular portion of the work, as well as create emotional intensity. While a popular technique in painting during the Baroque era, it’s also utilized in photography and cinema.
And it can also be sosyalin, especially when adapted in designing home interiors. We’re not talking about just taking colors from a chiaroscuro-style artwork (although we technically can). We’re talking about the careful technique of utilizing light and shadow elements to make a visually interesting home.
Chiaroscuro in Action
Interior designer Cristian Castaldi says that utilizing chiaroscuro in interior design “adds depth, atmosphere, and character to spaces” (IDW Italia). Mainly achieved using lighting elements, the contrast between shadows and illuminated areas can alter the feel of a room.
Depending on how the lighting fixtures are arranged, the room can feel more spacious or intimate. Strategic lighting also helps you place emphasis on furnishing you want to highlight in a space.
You can also make use of natural light. At certain points of the day, small but impactful streaks of light can make your room stunning.
Castaldi further suggests playing around with different finishes. Matte finishes absorb light while gloss finishes reflect light. These can influence how your lighting will impact a space.
You can also consider industrial textures achieved by concrete finishes or tiles. Those styles darken a space which can enhance the ambience brought by certain lighting methods. In a bathroom, for example, dramatic lighting with industrial textures can imitate a spa-like experience.
Chiaroscuro-Inspired Paint Ideas
While you can definitely use lighting fixtures to create a dramatic effect, painting your walls a certain color can also create this light and dark effect. A light accent wall against a mostly dark room makes that section feel detached.

Other finishes and furnishings can also be used to create lovely juxtapositions. Are dark cabinets your thing for a kitchen? Cabinet fixtures colored with black or deep shades can also darken a room. Pair those with white tiles for backsplashes or a marble countertop to make it great to the eyes. Painting the wall with a nice light neutral is also a good alternative.
