I saw something on social media that there is a poster at the entrance of NASA which says, “Aerodynamically a bee’s body is not made to fly; the good thing is that the bee doesn’t know.” After a few checks, I learned that no such poster exists, but I am not here to prove the veracity of this urban legend. I would rather focus on another thought that came to me from this so-called poster and that is a quote from American author William Arthur Ward:
“If you can imagine it, you can create it. If you can dream it, you can become it.”
Conceive your home
Usually, a dream home starts with a spark or a pang of longing for previous ones we lived in before. Ancestral or parental homes can ignite the imagination and probably sharpen the dream of a dwelling. This step can even start from childhood and can change as we grow older because of exposure to other ideas of what home could be like. If it is still blurred, we can bring it into focus so that we can really see and feel it, even smell it and hear the sounds.
Before he bought a place of his own, a friend of mine told me that he used to walk through city streets at night to look through picture windows. He said that he always dreamt of having a home with the same warm lights that bathed a living room with a cozy glow. He shared this while we were sitting in his own beautiful living room, sipping tea and shooting the breeze…and yes, while bathed in a pool of amber light.
To him, a home meant safety, comfort, and belonging. Reflect deeply on what a home means to you beyond just physical walls.
Create your home
When the time comes, maybe even before you move out of the parental house, this is the time to put in practical and active effort in planning to distill the idea of your dream home into one that is more concrete.
Making a collage and a moodboard are helpful tools. This blog offers so many ideas on how to go about it.
A collage is an artistic summary of all the things that you’d like for the look and feel of your own home. It’s something you can do when you are brainstorming about how to (re)design a living space. Think of it as your dream board.
A moodboard, on the other hand, is honing the collage because there is a strategic purpose to it. A moodboard requires images that are cohesive in terms of materials, color palettes, textures, design of home accessories, all the elements that will help you define the interior style that you’d like to create.
Manifest your home
Make it Easier for Architects and Interior Designers to Know What You Want
This is the part that is most exciting in my opinion, and also arguably the most stressful. If it’s a new build or a major renovation, it is best to get an architect and interior designer to help you in this phase.
This is the time when you give birth to what you conceived, when all your ideas will become concrete and tangible. If you are in alignment with your heart every step of the way, you are going to materialize your dream home.
From Dream to Home
I have seen many people who’ve made their dreams come true. It made me think that we have to take care about what we dream. Stay with the good stuff, those secret yearnings that would bring you to your happy place. When I look back at their lives, including my own, through a span of decades and see where we are now, it makes me believe in manifestation. Sure, there will be failures, disappointments, even heartbreaking events that will happen along the way. This brings to mind what a good friend says that brings me comfort and hope, “Things happen FOR you, not TO you.”
For me, it boils down to a great awareness of what to long for, what to choose, what to say, what to think, and what to do. Every step. No shortcuts. Just put that beautiful dream home at the front and center of your life. Even if what you’re doing now doesn’t seem to have any bearing on your dream, just trust the path. Any detours you may take belong to the life you are creating.
