When to Use Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer
Clear coats for wood are essential when wanting wood textures in your home. You have these options depending on the sheen you want:
- Boysen Clear Dead Flat Lacquer,
- Boysen Clear Gloss Lacquer, and
- Boysen Water White Clear Gloss Lacquer
To get an even application of these topcoats, you need to seal the wood using Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer. It closes off the pores of the wood, so the material becomes less ‘spongey’ in a way. When applying your choice of clear coat, the lacquer gets absorbed more evenly, creating a cleaner final look.
This product is also used to prevent tannin stains from appearing. Some materials are rich in tannin, resulting in the appearance of dark splotches on the wood. Though by the use of a sealer, you get to prevent the appearance of these things, especially if you have a specific look in mind.

You can also apply Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer directly on properly sanded bare wood. Finish the varnishing procedure by sanding the sealed wood lightly, then applying your lacquer topcoat of choice.
When working during cold, humid or rainy weather, it might be necessary to mix Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer with Boysen Lacquer Flo. This is an additive that slows down the drying process and prevents moisture from getting trapped. Trapped moisture results in the whitening of the lacquer film, called ‘moisture blushing.’ The amount of Lacquer Flo you need to add is 10% of the total volume of the sealer.

When to NOT Use Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer
The use of Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer is only for interior wood not subjected to foot traffic. It cannot be used as a wood sealer for wood surfaces that are exposed to UV and water, that get stepped on, or that have heavy objects placed on it.
If you do need a sealer for those cases, such as a wood deck or porch, one of your best options is Hudson Timbercoat Polyurethane Wood Coating. It’s a single-component product that’s both sealer and topcoat.
You apply one coat as a sealer, wait for it to dry, then apply another coat as the topcoat. You can apply multiple coats when necessary, waiting 1–2 hours for each coat to dry. It will take seven days for the coats to properly cure.
It’s a water-based coating which means it is lower in odor and easier to clean up, among other benefits. This product is available in gloss, semi-gloss, and matte sheens.
