Curious about Boysen Cool Shades? It’s an innovative product with a very practical feature—it can cool down your home. It’s no surprise that we get a lot of inquiries about it. So, we thought to address our most frequently received questions in a blog post. Here you go!

What is Boysen Cool Shades?

Boysen Cool Shades is a heat-reflecting roof paint. This special property means it can also lower the heat inside your home. It’s a useful feature when you live in the Philippines where the heat can be punishing.

Having a cooler home allows you to conserve energy by lowering your household’s electricity consumption and helps keep you more comfortable indoors as well.

How Does Cool Shades Cool Down My Home?

Frequently Asked Questions: Boysen Cool Shades | MyBoysen

Boysen Cool Shades takes the sunlight hitting your roof and bounces it back to the atmosphere before it has a chance to turn into heat that gets absorbed into your home.

It does this with the help of highly-engineered infrared-reflecting (IR) pigments. It’s this pigment that repels infrared light from the sun and reduces your roof’s heat build-up. When your roof is cooler, so is your home!

Is There a Color with the Best Cooling Effect?

Frequently Asked Questions: Boysen Cool Shades | MyBoysen

Boysen Cool Shades has several readily available colors for you to choose from. If you’re after the one with the best cooling effect though, Boysen engineers recommend going for white. White is the most reflective color and, therefore, can cool your home the best too.

If you’re in need of a primer, pair your Boysen Cool Shades in white with Boysen Primeguard also in white for maximum effect.

Can I Paint Cool Shades on Walls?

You might be hoping to get the cooling effect on more surfaces, not just your roof. After all, this would mean your home would be even cooler.

Here’s some bad news: you can’t use Boysen Cool Shades on concrete walls. This particular paint product is formulated for roofs only. It’s recommended for galvanized metal (yero), aluminum, stainless steel, and unglazed roof tiles.

Can I Paint Cool Shades on Roof Decks?

Frequently Asked Questions: Boysen Cool Shades | MyBoysen

If you have a roof deck instead of a metal roof, unfortunately, you cannot paint it with Boysen Cool Shades. This product is not meant to be applied on concrete. Again, it’s only recommended for galvanized metal (yero), aluminum, stainless steel, and unglazed roof tiles.

For paint for your roof deck, a better option would be Boysen Acqua Epoxy. It’s an exceptionally durable paint product that can be used on concrete floors. It’s solvent-, chemical-, and stain-resistant. It also has good gloss retention and UV resistance. For waterproofing, turn to Plexibond.

I Already Have Paint on My Roof. Can I Repaint with Cool Shades?

Yes, you can. As long as your roof is one of the surfaces that can be painted with Cool Shades, you can repaint it with Cool Shades.

If your roof’s existing paint is still in good condition, for surface preparation, you will need to sand the surface lightly first. Remove all the loose paint too. Then clean your roof so it’s free from any dust and dirt. If there are rusted areas, carry out rust treatment (see how here).

You don’t have to worry about changing the color of your roof either. Cool Shades has great hiding so your previous roof paint’s color will not show through your new coating of paint.
