Not all Epoxy Paint formulations are created equal, which is why we are here to talk about the other Epoxy. We wrote about Boysen Acqua Epoxy in one of our product highlights and now we are going to talk about its solvent-based variant, Boysen Epoxy Enamel.

Product Highlight: Boysen Epoxy Enamel Can

Boysen Epoxy Enamel is a high quality, two-component, epoxy-polyamide system that has excellent corrosion resistance and sealing properties. Two-component since every 4 L can of Epoxy Enamel comes with a 1 L can curing agent. It is used as a topcoat for Boysen Epoxy Primer and can be applied on interior concrete, wood, and metal surfaces to ensure a durable finish. Because of its high alkali-resistance feature, there is no need to neutralize the new concrete so it saves you time and effort.

Prepare the Surface

To make sure that you are giving your concrete flooring or any metal surface the best care, it is recommended to leave the mixing and application to professionals since the preparation is very critical.

But if you insist on helping with the process, you can prepare the work area and the materials needed for the paint job. If you are painting your floors, move out as much furniture as you can to be able to proceed smoothly. Sufficient protection and ventilation should be provided before, during, and after painting. The same amount of preparation goes with the surface that’s going to be painted. If it’s new concrete, allow curing for 14-28 days under normal weather conditions before painting. Wipe away any trace of grease or dirt immediately after. Follow this link to know the next step. If repainting, click here and let us show you how it’s done.

Protruding nails on wooden surfaces need to be hammered down before applying putty. Next, sand it down until it is smooth to the touch and then wipe the surface clean. Learn what to do next with old and new wooden surfaces by clicking on the links.

For metal surfaces, wipe the surface with a rag soaked in paint thinner to eliminate grease, oil, wax, or other contaminants. Then, prepare an etching solution. Carefully pour one part Boysen Metal Etching Solution B-71 into nine parts water. Spread the etching solution on the surface and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with water and dry right away. Apply the primer promptly after drying to avoid rust from forming. Know more about painting or repainting metal surfaces by clicking the links.

How to Use Boysen Epoxy Enamel

Veteran painters should know the proper usage of this product but for the benefit of everyone, here’s how to use Boysen Epoxy Enamel on different surfaces:

Concrete Flooring

Allow 20 minutes of induction time and then thin 1:1 with Epoxy Reducer B-55. Thinners and reducers are used to adjust paint viscosity and help ease the application of paint. Apply the solution as a primer coating on bare concrete floors. Let the surface dry overnight. Once done, mix three parts of Boysen Epoxy Enamel to one part of its catalyst and paint 2 to 3 coats of this mixture over a well-primed surface. Note that you CAN’T use it on its own. Allow 8 hours to overnight drying time before recoating.

Curing time takes 3 days for foot traffic and 7 days for heavy-duty application.

Metal

Prime bare metal with Boysen Epoxy Red Oxide Primer B-2277 or Boysen Epoxy Primer Gray B-2230. Allow 8 hours to overnight for complete curing. Apply 2 to 3 coats of Boysen Epoxy Enamel and let dry overnight before recoating.

Water Tank (Interior)

Most painters rely on Epoxy Enamel when painting the interiors of a water tank. To effectively use it, prime bare surface with Boysen Epoxy Primer White B-2200. Let dry 8 hours to overnight. Apply topcoat with 2 to 3 coats of Boysen Epoxy Enamel White B-2100 and wait for 24 hours before recoating. Remember that the curing time is strictly 7 days prior to the use of the tank.

    • Hi Von.

Thank you for your comment and for following us at Let it B.

For the interior of your galvanized water tank, please see below for our recommendation:
Prime bare substrate with BOYSEN Epoxy Primer White B-2200. Let dry 8 hours to overnight. Topcoat with 2 to 3 coats of BOYSEN Epoxy Enamel White B-2100. Let dry overnight before recoating. Curing is strictly 7 days prior to use of tank.

Application of topcoat should be done within 7 days after priming to ensure good intercoat adhesion, otherwise re-application of primer is needed.

Note: Flushing / Rinsing is required prior to filling with potable water.

  5. What is your best product that is suitable for roof decks and exterior and interior walls to prevent water from sipping in…thanks

    • Hi Lyndon.

Thank you for your comment and for following us at Let it B.

Our cementitious waterproofing system is called BOYSEN Plexibond. It was formulated to be applied on bare concrete and on the positive side. For your roof deck, you can use BOYSEN Plexibond provided that at least two inches of concrete topping and/or tiles will be applied after.
