In this moodboard video, we show a playroom using a postmodernist’s playbook…which is what exactly, you may ask. Postmodern is a design style popular in the 70s and 80s that cleaves towards vibrant colors, asymmetry, and bold details. It can be strange and unconventional, although what we show in the video is just pure charm.
This playroom is designed with a child’s development in mind. High contrast colors can be easily processed by young eyes and developing brains, and helps young children to sort and name colors, expand language skills, and build their memory. It even becomes an emotional vocabulary long before children can express themselves verbally. Colors also awaken children’s creativity and imagination, through drawing, painting, and other artistic activities.
The Moodboard
White is chosen as the primary paint color for the room because it is arguably the most versatile backdrop for any decor. It also reflects light and makes a room seem bigger.
Children grow up so fast, and their interests and tastes change along with their growth. What they loved as babies won’t be the same things they would love as toddlers, and even more so as school-age children when influences from the outside world, like teachers and classmates, will affect how they connect with the world.
White becomes a versatile backdrop that can absorb these changes. The furnishings of the playroom can be easily changed as the child grows from babyhood to puberty.
The other colors in this postmodern playroom are all vibrant primary and secondary colors. However, unlike Memphis Design, which is a sub-movement of Postmodernism, this playroom doesn’t have the neon colors and bold graphic shapes. Boysen Product Swatches
The paint we recommend is Boysen Permacoat Latex, which can be used on interior and exterior concrete, drywall, brick, and plaster surfaces. It can also be used on wood as long as the surface is properly primed first with Boysen WoodPrime. For high-friction areas such as wooden fixtures and furniture, use Boysen Quick Drying Enamel.
Boysen Permacoat Latex has excellent hiding, meaning the paint has high opacity that can completely cover a surface with just a few coats. This comes from the high amounts of dense pigments used in the formulation. Boysen has stood by the superior quality of their paint products for more than 70 years.
If you want to use Boysen Oil Wood Stain on wooden furniture, we recommend this Maple half tone color, instead of our present fave Walnut. The light maple color can turn into a warm gold honey hue over time. This fits this postmodern playroom better compared to the deep brown color of the walnut stain, which creates a warm, luxurious, and traditional vibe befitting spaces for discerning adults.
The Postmodern Playroom Reveal
I think giving your child his own playroom is such a gift which not many of us can afford. But if we can, I am sure a devoted and loving parent would give it without any hesitation. Imagine the many hours of dreaming and playing in this space. This could give untold wonders to a child’s development. Although come to think of it, anyone, child or adult, can dream and imagine anywhere.
