Verdant interior design style is not something new. It’s just a new name for what we’ve been writing about in this blog, starting in 2020 during the pandemic, when many dreamed about being in open spaces because we felt the need to break free from the exacting regulations of the lockdowns.
We called it biophilic design.
Biophilia is a strong connection with nature, and we build structures that allow nature in, when possible. If you search this term, you will find that we have written so many posts about biophilia,
Here are the elements of biophilic design:
- environmental features found in found in nature like air, water, sunlight, and plants
- biomorphic shapes and forms, i.e. non-structured and non-linear shapes
- natural patterns and processes, like water elements
- natural light and space
- place-based relationships, which means respecting the geographical space that your home is in
- evolved human-nature relationships, like bringing in green spaces even in commercial builds.
I encourage you to click on the image above to learn more about biophilic design and how this can help improve our well-being and ensure that our living spaces nourish and heal us as we inhabit them.
Verdant Interior Style
Fast forward five years, and we find ourselves in a world where there is so much noise, conflict, and aggression. It’s like the negative energy is on steroids. Tip: I suggest that you unplug yourself from the digital world hours before you go to bed.
Seeing the resurgence of biophilic design in the verdant interior style which occupies digital space nowadays is not a surprise. I think everyone can relate to the feeling of reaching out to nature to bring us peace and calm. Unfortunately, many of us don’t live near forests where we can visit regularly to do shinrin-yoku, to emulate the Japanese practice of forest bathing.
However, we don’t really need forests, or parks, or beaches) to improve our health. Here are ways to create the verdant interior design style in your home:
- bring plants into your home
- use green paint for those verdant vibes (click on the link for Boysen green paint examples)

- connect indoor and outdoor spaces with the use of doors, brise-soleils, or breeze blocks
- create exterior domestic spaces like a balcony, terrace, veranda, or patio
- use natural and organic materials in your home like wood and stone
Whether it’s called verdant interior design style or biophilic design, both are clearly nature-inspired. I don’t think that this kind of look will ever go out of style.
