Here at the Let it B blog, we are loving the classic holiday hues of red, green, and gold. We may be having a hangover from our Christmas mini makeovers where we used these colors for the Christmas trees.

Aesthetically speaking, these colors just go so well together. Green provides a perfect backdrop for the complementary color red, and makes the latter even more striking with its vibrant energy. Gold, on the other hand, is the gem that adds luxury and shine to your dwelling for this season of celebration.

Red, green, and gold have become the traditional Christmas colors through the years, and have solidified their place during this season. Whether it’s driven by ancient practices, religion, or commerce, this color combination is ingrained in our psyche to mean Christmas.

Many people attribute Christian symbolism to these colors.

Red

Red commands attention. It’s strong, dynamic, and full of energy. For Christians, the color symbolizes the blood shed by Jesus Christ during the crucifixion. Jesus saving us means that he atoned for our sins so we have eternal life.

Holly with its rich red berries, and the poinsettia with its red petals, are the two plants that are commonly used as adornment inside and outside the home.

Green

Before Christianity, Celts and pagans already used evergreens like firs, spruce, and pine to decorate their windows and doors to ward off evil spirits. It was also a reminder that green plants would grow again, and farms and orchards would flourish in the future.

In a way, this is much like biophilic design, when plants would be brought into homes to bring life into our homes.

Gold

Gold symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem, as well as the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh given to Jesus by the Three Wise Men. Because it has value, gold is also a symbol of wealth, prosperity, and abundance. So hang gold balls, decorate your home with tinsel, and have gold parols gaily adorning your interiors and exteriors.

Classic Christmas Colors

Red, green, and gold are classic Christmas colors. This combination is something most people recognize, and look forward to seeing during the Yuletide season.
