“I’m a hoarder of music.” Good thing Audio Accumulation Anonymous has yet to be formed. Otherwise, they’d send me an application form, no doubt. I currently have around 3,000 compact discs and about a thousand vinyl records in my possession. I would prefer to call myself a collector but I am guilty of stockpiling CDs and LPs every chance I get. Flea markets, yard sales, foreign trips, etc.– I’m always on the hunt. So, yes to minimalist apologists, I’m guilty as charged. REWIND I buy everything from A-ha to Zappa, from…

Maximal is an exuberant palette, one of the four comprising the Boysen Color Trend 2017. The jewel tones of blue, yellow, red and pink invite the intrepid individual to create a space celebrating his or her individuality. Maximal includes a  light grey to provide the rest amidst this color explosion. Bold, vibrant, and flamboyant, it takes its inspiration from florals. At first glance, it would seem that Maximal is a feminine palette. Think of a doyenne’s domain or a precocious girl’s boudoir, or the living space of a woman in her prime who plays by her own…

Over the years, I’ve noticed that my room gets messier as I get more stressed. Reasons include not having the time or energy to clean up after myself, falling right into bed after long days at work, or generally being a lot messier and less aware of myself when I’m stressed out. And I know this is the complete opposite of what should happen—stressful times call for more organized and orderly environments to get things done faster. Millennials like myself will agree: old-school organization tricks don’t always fit into our lifestyles.…

Technology is one of the four new palettes of the Boysen Color Trend 2017. It is a palette of bright pastel colors saturated with light. You have yellows, blues, oranges and pinks that expand the perception of space and makes it feel lighthearted but also sophisticated at the same time. Inspired by digital photo filters that have taken the world by storm and refracted light penetrating new materials with varying degrees of transparency, Technology’s colors make a space feel happy and carefree in a very 21st century kind of way. There are…

Every color has its own temperament. They have the remarkable ability to convey a very specific feeling, mood, and atmosphere. They even have the power to influence emotion and behavior. That’s why choosing colors for your home can be such an important decision. What’s the first thing you want your guests to feel when they enter a room? What atmosphere do you want to create? What bedroom colors best suit your personality? The meanings and associations of colors vary drastically across cultures and individuals. You may have learned to associate specific…

After every school day, when my ten-year old son comes home from school, I greet him with a chirpy, “How was school today?” He smilingly greets me back with a kiss, “It was ok,” he cheerfully answers. Then I reply with something like, “Have something to eat, rest a bit, then we’ll study.”  And just like that, as if on cue, a monster of a wail is heard within the walls of our entire house. The message is clear: I’m not in the mood to study. Rewind, playback. This scene is…

Boysen launched Color Trend 2017 last week in the Interior & Design Manila at the SMX Convention Center. You will see it again in Worldbex on March 15 to 19 at the World Trade Center. For this week, we are focusing on Tradition, a palette of rich but muted colors of green, brown, blue and red. The inspiration comes from vernacular concepts of beauty which have been redefined through time and technological manufacturing advancements of materials. For example, what may once have been a humble weave pattern by a tribe may…

They say that to truly know a person, you have to walk a mile in their shoes. But personally, to learn more about someone I look at their homes. When you think about it, that makes sense—your home is where you are most comfortable, where you can be your most “authentic” self. It’s where you spend long periods of time, and it’s a space that provides you with all the basic necessities to survive. No matter how small or uncomfortable our houses are, we always do our best to make it more “homey,” right?

Our beautiful country spoils us with the blues that surround us, from that blue sky above to the blue sea that stretches far away into the horizon. Go to sleep, baby. Mama will sing Of blue butterflies, and dragonfly wings. Moonlight and sunbeams, raiments so fine. Silver and gold, for baby of mine. – Kim Harrison, “Black Magic Sanction” What do you say when your child asks you, “Why is the sky blue?” NASA would answer, “Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth’s atmosphere. Blue…

It’s the tender moments spent together when trust weaves its magic spell to coax two people to drop the masks and open themselves up to each other. Much like a flower unfurling its petals to the sun, that’s how the fragile tendrils of an awakened heart seem. This is the walking-on-pink-clouds phase, misty, dreamy, with gentle, shimmering lights twinkling around you, outside you, inside you. Nothing is impossible: Everything is beautiful, even that long to-do list filed at the back of your head, of things that need to be done today.  You’re wrapped…
