It’s January 31! It’s like January 1 to 30 Usain-Bolted themselves to this day. Seriously, where did the month go? It doesn’t matter though, because we’ve got all the time to renovate or redecorate our homes to fit the 2024 us.
Those who are now in the thick of giving your homes a new look, this post on Etsy home trends may be useful.
The Color Berry
We touched on Etsy’s Berry in this post, and compared it to Pantone’s Peach Fuzz. It’s your choice whether to go light and breezy or go romantic and intense. What do you think your mood meter for this year is?
You do know that you could always have both. Peach Fuzz for the living room to get that cozy and charming vibe going to help along any social gatherings that you may be having at home. And then, go Berry in the bedroom for those cocooning nights.
Nature-Inspired Living Spaces
We’ve talked about using nature as inspiration starting from Boysen’s very first Color Trend 2015 with the Naturist color palette. Check out the Color Trend palettes in this link since 2015.
This blog is also full of posts that talk about paint color palettes and interior design styles inspired by nature. Here are three:

For the longest time, we’ve all been enamored with Scandinavian (or Scandi) design with its authentic materials and natural color palettes of light wood, white, gray, blue, black, and cream.
But now, Etsy says people are moving towards darker, more traditional wood colors like mahogany and walnut. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back with Boysen wood stains.
Mermaidcore
After all the cores we talked about in this blog—cottagecore, cluttercore, carnivalcore—here’s another core from Gen Z called mermaidcore.
This micro trend made its way from fashion to interior design. As the name says, it’s all about things mermaid with oceanscapes as backdrop or decor.
For this aesthetic:
- use muted pastels like blue, green, pink, yellow
- use patterns like shell, seagrass, coral on your walls, or fish scale tiles and scalloped edges on backs of furniture
- for fabrics, use something soft that drapes like silk or satin, and opt for shiny, shimmering, splendid (wait, that’s Aladdin, better get ideas from The Little Mermaid)
- have some sequins, beadings, or pearls on some of your soft accessories
- for home accessories, use glass in the colors mentioned above
- have some ocean-related objects, like mother of pearl, shells (nothing from endangered species please), corals (please use resin instead of the real thing!), driftwood
- see Jelly Joy and Aquatic Architecture in the Pinterest 2024 Home Trends post
Tip: We’ve got something in the Philippines that would fit perfectly with this style and that’s capiz! Get sliding windows and doors made with this material. Hanging or pendant lamps made of capiz are also worth considering.
Just don’t be too thematic about it though, otherwise, the whole vibe may feel oppressive.
Vintage Vibe
Etsy says that Vintage is so in. Several generations—from Gen Z to boomers—are driving the trend.
Personally, I am a fan of old hardwood furniture passed down as heirlooms, also functional home accessories that can be used as decor.
Trawl for pre-loved vintage items in markets and stores. Best if you have a family bodega where you can spend an afternoon or two exploring your family treasures. Take home one or two if that is allowed.
Another way to have the vintage vibe is to get patterns like toile de jouy, chintz, or vintage floral prints. Botanical items are big right now.
People are moving away from minimalist to creating a more cozy and nostalgic home, so having more details in your home is right on trend.
Roll Out the Carpet
Handwoven, colorful rugs are getting noticed. 70s-inspired shags, or carpets that have Moroccan or Turkish designs, are getting the eyeballs on Etsy.
I can understand people wanting to have these in their homes. They do make walking barefoot around the house comfortable.
My concern though is that carpets or rugs are not good for people who are prone to allergies. It’s common knowledge that common allergens like dust and pollen get trapped in these, especially shags with their long piles. So think about that before you roll out the carpet in your home.
Paper Lights
Check out these retro lights that are back in vogue.
I mentioned the Akari lamps designed by Isamu Noguchi in the 50s. The diffused light really glows and makes a room look cozy, warm, and inviting. You can score some good dupes from Ikea.
Go for origami or mushroom shapes.
Decorative Accents
Stay within budget by adding luxurious finishing touches instead of changing big-ticket items like furniture.
An example would be to change the hardware of your cabinets or drawers using metallic or glass pulls or knobs. Think of it as jewelry for your home so choose something that catches and reflects light like mirror, glass, or metallic accents like gold, silver, copper or brass.
Get throw pillows that look luxurious. You can even make your own. Use elegant shimmering fabric and dress them up with crystals, sequins, beads, pearls. The comfort factor may have to be sacrificed so just add one or two with the bells and whistles. Leave the rest encased in their silky outfits for your lounging activities.
Parisian Interiors
Ooh la la. Are you thinking of getting your home a makeover to give it that tres chic Parisian vibe? Well, now is the time to do it because this style is so in. Although, when you think about Parisian interiors, you think about getting the elegance, sophistication, style that the Parisians are known for, and most of all, the timelessness of the design itself.
Parisian interiors are not trendy by nature. Today, they are a blend of the classical and contemporary. Ornate architectural features like high ceilings and windows, moldings, and marble floors give a sophisticated flair to any space. Bring in modern furnishings and you’ve got that je ne sais quoi going, which gives the interiors that very special distinguished mystique which oozes style from every square centimeter of space.
Get that Parisian vibe with vintage conventional furniture (that have curved drawer fronts or cabriole legs, if possible), light neutral walls, gilt mirrors, marble accessories, decorative molding, and lots of artwork on walls. Parisian interior design also calls for an ornate fireplace or column pedestals, but I think this would be pushing it too far in the Philippines.
